Along with Rieu and the orchestra, each show features six truly gifted vocalists, such as Carmen Monarcha who has been with Rieu since 2003. Other vocalists are Brisbane’s Mirusia Louwerse, South Africa’s Kimmy Skota, and The Platin Tenors consisting of Australia’s Gary Bennett, Thomas Greuel from Germany and Hungary’s Béla Mavrák.

Another Golden Oldie from Ineke and Ruud's Movie Site
André recently had to cancel his first tour to the United Kingdom and Ireland. In the past he has performed there before. We all know the DVD from the Royal Albert Hall. A few of you may remember his appearance in the 1998 "Lesley Garrett Tonight" show. Lesley Garrett is a well known English soprano. Here she sings together with André who is dressed for the occasion in a leather jacket ... Ruud and Ineke

André Rieu My Life Subsequent To The Virus

André Rieu My Life Subsequent To The Virus

He lost his balance ~ Two tours were canceled. But the star violinist fought back ...
Maastricht: His fans have been very concerned. "Waltz king" André Rieu (61) had to cancel two International Tours due to an ominous disease. But he is back again ... his life subsequent the virus drama.
Six performances were scheduled for Fall by the Dutchman in England and Northern Ireland. And a string of twelve for Australia and New Zealand. There were speculations about his illness. And now "Super Illu" visited him in his 300 year old castle near Maastricht. He insisted: "I'm fine, and I am making huge progress."
In August, the Star Violinist lost his sense of balance. Rieu said: "I almost fell over in a supermarket. I was dizzy and blacked out. The diagnoses, a viral infection that led to the loss of balance".
Doctors prescribed lots of rest and absolutely no stress. Surrounded by his family (wife Marjorie, sons, Pierre and Marc, and grandchildren), he is now recovering. His daily routine is, walking the dogs, treadmill exercises and eating healthy foods to ensure a speedy recovery.
The disease will definitely leave an after effect ~ a financial one. Despite the cancellations of his tours, the salary of the 120 musicians of Rieu's Johann Strauss Orchestra will continue to be paid. Rieu, "But we can overcome that."
The "Waltz King" has extended his two-month long forced break by another four weeks just to be sure. But he promised, "On November 18th I will again be on stage in Antwerp.“ His tour in Germany with concerts in Erfurt, Leipzig and Magdeburg are not in danger. Then André Rieu will let his Stradivarius glow again and melt away his public

An Interview With André Rieu Soloist Mirusia Louwerse

AN INTERVIEW WITH MIRUSIA

October 10, 2010 Mirusia Louwerse is a 25 year old Aussie soprano who was born and raised in Brisbane. She is currently working with world renowned violinist Andre Rieu, and took some time out to help us get to know her a little better in the lead up to the release of her first solo album “Always & Forever”.
I started training singing Country and Pop music when I was 12. I was doing Ju-Jitsu and my dad gave me a choice, Ju-Jitsu or singing lessons. When he suggested singing lessons I got butterflies in my stomach and straight away couldn’t think of anything else. Ju-Jitsu didn’t matter to me anymore! The first song I ever sang in the singing lessons was “The Greatest Love of All”. I still have the recording …

André Rieu Writes for Eigen Bedrijf: "Flexible Rules"

André Rieu Writes FLEXIBLE RULES
André Rieu
Eigen Bedrijf October 7, 2010: In the previous issue I wrote you all that we were busy bringing a South African children's choir to the Netherlands for the Vrijthof Concerts. I can tell you, it worked. And I'm extremely proud of that. In the meantime, the South African concerts with sixty children with ages between twelve and fifteen years, are behind us and it was phenomenal.

The idea came to me when I visited a township in Hout Bay/Cape Town in May, where I was struck by the joy in which the children were making music, and also by the appalling conditions in which they live. I invited the choir to attend one of my concerts in Cape Town, which they did. Afterwards backstage they began to sing spontaneously and it was one big party. "You must come to Maastricht" I cried with enthusiasm. They looked at me puzzled. "Say that it is in Europe, the Netherlands", Pierre my son whispered in my ear and when I said that, they fell over. And not just them .......... our own Frans Neus, responsible for guest appearances and special projects, turned pale when he realized what was facing him, "How do I get sixty children and their chaparones to the Netherlands without passports?"

It turned out not so bad after all. "Only" thirty children did not have a passport or birth certificate. Can you imagine: these people are not living in a very technically era. We had a contact in the Foreign Affairs Office and also our partner in South Africa was helping us in getting in contact with the South African government which was also very willing. To obtain a birth certificate you have to have a father and mother. The mother could easily be found, but the father? He could be this one or that one, or his brother or his neighbor or an uncle, in short, we were pleased that the government was so very flexible regarding its rules. On the day of the general rehearsal the choir arrived in Maastricht, a very great moment.

Not always are we in countries when we perform where we are treated with so much courtesy and responsiveness. I remember our tour through the U.S. in 2007 where we traversed all the states in our own three buses. In New Mexico, our buses were taken off the road by the border patrol (Truck/bus inspection station). We did not have the proper documentation and had to use all of our best persuasion powers that day to ensure that our Dutch driver did not spend the night in jail. In no other state did we ever encounter any problems so far, but this officer would not budge. And for whatever reasons which are still unclear to me today, we eventually had to hire buses to pick us up and bring us to the concert location. I mean, we need rules in a society, but when a little flexibility is shown at the proper time to let a company function happily, that is indispensable.

ANDRÉ RIEU Writes of Reactions After The Vrijthof Concerts

Reactions After The Vrijthof Concerts ~ A Warm Shower

The October/November Column by André Rieu: This past summer I had time to enjoy the reactions of my eight concerts on the Vrijthof square. They were more overwhelming than ever; they felt like a warm shower. We received a lot of letters with the meaning that "a warm and positive wave had gone through Maastricht". That really touches me. Marjorie and I are very proud that we can bring about such happy feelings to so many people. There is already a lot of misery in the world and it is then great to notice how our music lifts people up. The audience literally received a warm shower on the first Saturday night on the Vrijthof, which fortunately started only halfway through the encores and with the temperature above 30 degrees C, it was bearable. But with the heat wave, and also the final match of the Netherlands in the World Cup Soccer, it was not so easy for the City council and us to make the right decisions: to move the first Sunday concert from the evening to the afternoon and from the Vrijthof to the MECC. But I think we finally made the right choice.
We also noticed that people come from all over the world to Maastricht for our concerts. Not only from the Netherlands and Belgium, but really from all over the world, from Brazil to New Zealand. Not too bad for the image of Maastricht and the entire region, I think. The children, who we brought over from South Africa to perform, really had the time of their lives. I still receive letters from them daily. Like, "I was that girl standing next to you and I think you are an amazing man". That really touches me, great!
We are already looking forward towards the preparations of the Vrijthof concerts in 2011. But obviously we are not that far along yet. There is still a lot on our program.
We are recording an Autumn Special on the beautiful flower island of Mainau, for the German TV station ZDF. After that we have our very important tour through England, with an opening concert in the infamous O2 Arena in London. We have been to Great Britain before, but this will be our first big tour of which we expect a lot. Next, for the third time, we will go to Australia. That's always exciting, if just only for the distances. The audience is always very ecstatic, so it is very nice to perform there.
After that, a new challenge is awaiting us: Mexico. That in fact will be the kickoff for we hope, possibly more tours in Latin America. The reactions from Mexico are already heartwarming; they apparently have been waiting for us for years, so that looks promising!
Yes, and then for the first time in my 32 year career I had to cancel and reschedule three concerts in Heerenveen and Amsterdam, because I was ill for a few weeks due to a viral infection in my inner ear, which wanted to conquer me. I am not used to that and I become impatient and angry. But to the virus, that does not really matter. Only medications and lots of rest can chase that away. That's nothing for me, but I have no other choice. My illness started in the only single week that I promised myself a holiday (at home). Marjorie's analysis was very clear: "Holidays are not for you, you only become ill" ... "I fear she is right!!"
