Statue of Rieu as Seen in 2012
For all the fans who wondered where André's sculpture had gone: this article appeared in the Limburg ... Limburg Newspaper: André Rieu places no value on a statue to be placed somewhere in Maastricht. That is what the city councel replied to Piet Der Kinderen, who showed a life-size statue of the conductor in his galery on the Nieuwstraat 13, during the weekend of the TEFAF art fair in Maastricht. Der Kinderen and his across the street neighbor Wenke Rutten contacted the City Council with the request to give the sculpture by Alexander Taratynov a permanent place in the city. Other Rieu fans (WE!!!!) have also pleaded with the City Council for the statue of the violinist. Photos: The sculpture in the garden of Chateau St. Gerlach (with Al Girard): 2011. No, as nice as Andre's music is and as busily visited his concerts are, as a resident of Maastricht I have to say no to a statue of the masetro, and I am pretty sure almost every inhabitant will agree with me.

How like The Maestro to want to remain understated. Andre is absolutely not like most of today's so called "celebrities" with huge opinions of themselves. In any case, we do not need such things as Andre lives in all our hearts, as we do in his.

I happen to think it would be great to have it somewhere in Maastricht that his fans could go visit and see even though it is not the most flattering of statues. Fans would love to have photgraphs taken with it, after all it is the closest most will ever get to the great man. Its a shame if it never gets put out again.
ReplyDeleteyeah, but we in Maastricht do not want a statue just so fans can take pictures of it, sorry. I am sure you can understand our sentiments :-)
