André Rieu At Departure Ceremony For Mayor Leers

Rieu Will Be Live Via Video at Departure Ceremony For Gerd Leers

Maastricht February 16, 2010: The "People's Farewell" to (Maastricht's Mayor) Gerd Leers will be held on February 26, 2010 and will be adorned with a live video of André Rieu, who will then be performing in Zürich. According to organizer Huub Adriaens, Rieu has rented a control trailer with a dozen cameramen in order to partake in the people's farewell." The images will be a gift to the outgoing Mayor.

Thousands of people are expected on The Market that Friday. "Als Frans Theunisz and 'The Mastreechter Star' will also be performing, but the focus of the festivities will be on the ordinary people", said Adriaens. "For our speakers we will have just ordinary persons. This will not be a protest demonstration". All texts will first be discussed, and the intention is for only words of thanks.

  1. Thanks Sue and John for another interesting translation and article. The Mayor will be a great loss to Maastricht, the love for his hometown will be difficult to match.

  3. And let us not forget his enthusiastic support for Andre - he has been a staunch supporter of Andre and the JSO. The next mayor might like Lady Gaga - or someone similar - goodness gracious, but, all best wishes to Mayor Leers on his departure from Local Government.

  4. The residents of Maastricht support Mr.Leers, they want him back. They had a protest demonstration on the Vrijthof a few weeks ago. They put the blame on some political parties who wanted to get rid of the vigorous mayor!

  5. I believe that Ineke!! I know I'm going to miss him in his position and I'm not even from Maastricht!!
He got a raw deal and it's a shame to such a nice man that loves his city more than anyone I think they will find to replace him!! :/

  7. Mayor Keers is certainly a big supporter of Andre. I remember seeing him in Toronto when he came over for the debut of Andre's Schoenbrun Palace concert.

  8. O yes, and on the DVD "Live in Maastricht 3" You can see him in the audience, cheering as a real fan. Andre played a "Happy birthday" for him (that's is not on the DVD) for Mr.Leers' birthday is 12th July and he attended a concert that day!
