Vrijthof Six Days Confirmed, Seventh Concert Still Possible

MAASTRICHT by Stefan Gybels: André Rieu will again change his Vrijthof Concerts to the MECC this year if severe inclement weather prevails. Just like last year, the Vrijthof will be copied in the congress center.

On 11 July 2010 Rieu used the hall for the first time. The cause for the move was not because of stormy weather or rain, but was due to the world soccer game between the Netherlands and Spain. Since the match was broadcast live on the large screens around the Vrijthof, Rieu initially changed the concert to the afternoon. But due to the enormous heat that day, the back-up plan to use the MECC was implemented at the last moment.

The walls of the congress center were changed with enormous wall pieces depicting the buildings around the Vrijthof. Rieu evaluated his concert in the congress center and was satisfied with the construction results. Consequently the mini Vrijthof will again appear in the congress hall this year.

Kerstin Cornelis, spokesperson for Rieu, emphasized that changing to the MECC will only take place in case of continued inclement weather. "We will not move for just a single shower. Only when it is really stormy, will we go inside."

The orchestra leader will perform six times on the Vrijthof. On 15, 16, 17 and 22, 23 and 24 July. The Vrijthof will be changed over into a Concert Square for Rieu. The possibility for a seventh concert does exist, according to Cornelis, however there are currently still tickets available for the six confirmed concert dates. Rieu started in 2005 with his Vrijthof concerts. Back then there were only four, but that appeared not to be enough to satisfy all the fans. Last year the counter stopped with eight concerts.
