André Rieu: I Wanted More Than Polite Applause
March 27, 2011: The superstar violinist and conductor hits out at classical music’s perceived stiffness. André Rieu has told Classic FM’s Nick Ferrari that classical music isn’t as emotionally charged as it should be. Speaking as part of a conversation to be broadcast tomorrow on Sunday, March 27, the violinist told Nick:
“It’s just my character! I was always looking to the beautiful girls in the audience – I wanted more than just polite applause. Music for me is a tool to be in contact with you. “It’s not about ‘listen to how good I play’. You hear that much too often in classical music. We don’t speak about feelings any more, we speak about ‘He’s a better player than she is!’.
“I read a book by Rubinstein who talked about these ‘poor musicians, having to compare and compete with each other!’. I was in Poland at the time and having great fun with all the girls and laughing! It was a beautiful life!”.

Loved your interview especially the part where you said you fall in love with your audience and i am sure they also fall in love with you, what's not to love as you give so much enjoyment to everyone with your music, you play with such emotion and passion. I think Andre is an outstanding classical music performer and i wish i could rewind time so i did not miss out on all the years of listening to his music. I think Andre has a fantastic orchestra and he took classical music to another level and i just simply love it, to know you is to love you, can't wait to see you in Toronto blue eyes. love Barb
Well said Barb, as you said to know him is to love him and what’s not to love. I also wish I could rewind time, all those years he was making beautiful music and I didn’t know he existed. I can't wait to see him in Melbourne on May 11.
You are so lucky Mary Webster as you get Andre and the Jso for two concerts in Melbourne. He has not announced yet when he will be in Toronto, but he is touring U.S.A. and Canada in September, I just simply love the man and his music, what would we do without him.
