Memorial For Fallen Americans at Margraten

MARGRATEN - March 24, 2009 Five F-16's from the Dutch Airbase Volkel will do a flyby over the American Cemetery in Margraten in Southern Limburg. The only American Cemetery of World War II in the Netherlands will observe it's annual Memorial Day Services.
In this flyby, the American Military, who lost their lives in battles in the German Ruhr area, the Belgian Ardennes and in the liberation of the South of the Netherlands in World War II, will be remembered.
In this cemetery 8302 soldiers are entombed/interred . The ground has been forever made available by the Dutch government. Annually, on the last Sunday in May the dead are remembered on Memorial Day by the Royal Air Force's F-16's salute.
Defense Minister Eimert van Middelkoop will attend the Memorial Services.

F-16's flying over the Cemetery as a tribute to those who have fallen.

Thank You to John de Jong for sending this with the ©Translation ~ Here is a link to a little more about Margraten which is located about 6 miles out of Maastricht. http://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries/cemeteries/ne.php

Thanks for posting this Sue and John. My husband and I visited Margraten on our first trip to Maastricht in 2006. Well worth going out there - not far. And I remember Sonja telling us that Andre and Pierre took the floral stage decorations out there following the first Maastricht concert and taping (HOMECOMING)in 2005. The Dutch people are very appreciative of our troops liberating them.
A timely reminder on our Memorial Day weekend.

You know Laurie, for two years now I have wanted to see Margraten and never make it out there. It is only 6 miles and they have a bus service that goes every hour to it.

This year Betty and I have put it at the TOP of our list of things to do!! We are taking a day to go to Volkenburg and then on to Margraten ... I'm sure standing in Margraten is a very emotional experience and I'm looking forward to it ... Sue :)
